Let's be honest, sometimes/often/frequently life just kicks you in the teeth/throws you a curveball/shoots you in the foot. But there are times when things get so bad, so utterly and completely awful, that it feels like the universe is out to get you. It's like being stuck in a never-ending cycle of misery/pain/bad luck. You just can't catch a break.

Maybe someday/Perhaps one day things will look up/get better/turn around. Until then, we just have to grin and bear it/suck it up/keep on truckin'

You've hit the bottom/deep end/pits of the barrel. You're scraping the surface/scrap heap/floor looking for anything decent/useful/worth a damn. Things are rough/tough/shaky, and you're feeling like you're in over your head/neck/shoes. My recent trip/experience/outing was an absolute/simply the worst/a complete disaster. From the moment/instant/very beginning I arrived, everything went horribly/awfully/terribly wrong. The staff/service/personnel were rude/unhelpful/dismissive, the food/cuisine/meal was inedible/appalling/awful, and the atmosphere/ambiance/mood was gloomy/depressing/dreary. I even managed to/experienced a series of unfortunate events like/got caught in a downpour, soaking/drenching/wetting me to the bone. Overall, this was an unforgettable/memorable/horrible experience that I would strongly advise against/recommend avoiding/never repeat.
